Jane Marshall deserves special mention in The Basement Diaries but I hardly know where to begin. She was one of the guys in the best sense of that unflattering description. She was our token goddess… our temptress… our little sister… and our constant source of amusement. Lots of girls visited The Basement but Jane reigned without peer. She was one of us.
From the beginning, Jane shared the groups sense of the theatrical. When RP shot his first roll of Super 8, Jane was there in a starring role. Here she and Lynn entertain the troops with the ever-popular “cat fight.” (below)
You’ll see her face and read her name often in The Basement Diaries. This effort will not be complete until Jane tells her version of The Basement Diaries.
Email from Jane shortly after publication of The Basement Diaries in 1998:
“I hope you get this, it’s my first email message. I may have misled you when I said the picture (First Basement Picture) was 1968. It was, but I believe we were partying pretty hard the year before, because I remember someone going to Expo ’67 and we moved it upstairs. I believe that may have been when we started surfing down the stairs on the guys’ backs. It may have been then we started “spin the body.”
I don’t remember sweating in the basement. … You must also include the music of Canned Heat and Janis Joplin. And since you’re putting this in chronological order, don’t forget the float trip.”
