In 1979 the Halloween party moved uptown (or, at least, across town) to Ann Hicklin’s new house on College Avenue. After five consecutive years, the Annual Halloween Party had become something of an event. The party grew in size andAnne HicklinĀ competition for best costume become fierce.
In 1979 we formalized the costume competition by awarding a trophy. (We might have voted on Best Costume in 1978 but I can find no record of who won.) Ann Hicklin took 1st Place with here Miss Piggy costume. He had the look…the attitude…she was brilliant. Libby and Everett Mobley (2nd Place) stayed in costume and in character as Star Wars Jawas (the glowing eyes were masterful).
3rd Place went to Sandy and Tommy Crunk for their “performance art” piece, Plantation Slave Girl and Evil Klansman. It was now apparent that Sandy and Tommy were up to more than Halloween costumes. Their costumes the year before (Priest and Pregnant Nun) made a powerful statement. Klansman & Slave Girl upped the ante.
Ann hosted the Halloween party again in 1980 and there’s a case to be made that these two years marked the high-water point in the history of the Halloween parties.
